About the Program

What is FOCUS on New Haven?

Since its founding in 1991, the program has evolved significantly and will continue to do so as we learn more about how Yale students can most effectively and appropriately engage with New Haven.

FOCUS is a Camp Yale program that emphasizes exploration and social justice in New Haven! With their FOCUS families, participants will work alongside community partners all around the city on issues ranging from environmental sustainability to criminal justice reform. They will also attend speaker events where they can chat with community leaders and dive into the rich history of Yale and New Haven’s relationship. Our FOCUS leaders will be guides to the vibrant culture and surrounding community as they explore the city of New Haven, taking them to museums, vintage stores, libraries, and local restaurants.

Over four days, participants volunteer at local non-profits, meet local change-makers, and discuss how systems of oppression influence the relationship between Yale and New Haven. Students will explore New Haven’s diverse neighborhoods, savor delicious local cuisine, and immerse themselves in the city’s unique culture, all while forming lasting friendships within their FOCUS families. Our hope is for students to conclude the program with an understanding of how they can make a sustainable impact on the city Yale calls home.
